Partnership with Lagos State Government
Dr. Walter Mulombo, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, has reiterated the organization’s dedication to enhancing healthcare in Lagos State. During a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mulombo emphasized WHO’s commitment to collaborating with the state government in its healthcare initiatives.
Building on Previous Commitments
Mulombo recalled that Governor Sanwo-Olu had previously expressed a strong commitment to improving healthcare services during a meeting at Chatham House in London. This pledge has paved the way for WHO’s decision to partner with Lagos State to strengthen healthcare reforms and deliver tangible outcomes.
Strengthening Human Resources for Health
Mulombo pledged WHO’s support in developing a skilled and responsive health workforce in Lagos. He highlighted that by investing in human resources for health, Nigeria can improve health outcomes and reinforce the overall healthcare system in Lagos. “Counting on Mr. Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, WHO is willing to partner with the Lagos State Government to strengthen human resources for health,” Mulombo stated.
Achievements in Health Insurance and Medical Attraction
Lagos State has made significant strides in healthcare, including leading the Health Insurance Scheme with over one million enrollees—exceeding state targets—and contributing more than 10% to the national GDP. Additionally, the state has been attracting medical practitioners from the diaspora, reflecting trends seen in medical tourism in countries like India.
WHO to Pilot Global Healthcare Framework in Lagos
Praising Governor Sanwo-Olu’s primary healthcare reforms, Mulombo announced that WHO will pilot the global framework for strengthening healthcare emergencies in urban areas within Lagos State. This initiative aims to enhance the state’s capacity to respond to health emergencies effectively.
Addressing the Cholera Outbreak
Mulombo expressed concern over the ongoing cholera outbreak in Lagos, emphasizing the need for an escalated response to prevent further spread and fatalities. He also highlighted the importance of addressing environmental factors, stating, “The health of the population is intrinsically linked to the environment. We must adopt strategies that address both health and ecological challenges to achieve sustainable development.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Response
In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu welcomed the WHO framework and expressed gratitude for the organization’s continued support. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing emergency preparedness, improving health infrastructure, and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders to build a resilient city.
Sanwo-Olu stated, “We are grateful for WHO’s partnership and support in our fight against cholera and other health challenges. Our administration is dedicated to creating a healthier Lagos by investing in health infrastructure, promoting environmental sanitation, and ensuring access to clean water.”
A Significant Step Forward
The partnership between WHO and Lagos State marks a significant step towards advancing health emergency preparedness in urban settings. The collaboration is expected to have a profound impact on the health and well-being of Lagos residents.
