Chef Smith, who recently garnered attention for reportedly setting a new culinary record, has been widely celebrated and acclaimed. However, concerns arose about the validity of his claim, leading Guinness World Records to launch an investigation.
Guinness World Record Denied Chef Smith from Ghana
In an official response to an email from GHone TV, Guinness World Records clarified the situation, stating, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title, and that certificate is not ours. The current and verified record holder is: The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 119 hr 57 min 16 sec, achieved by Alan Fisher (Ireland) in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from 28 September to 3 October 2023.”
The news has sparked a wave of disappointment and disbelief among Chef Smith’s supporters and the broader culinary community in Ghana. Many had celebrated his claimed achievement as a major milestone for the country’s culinary arts.
Chef Ebenezer Smith Fake Claim
On July 2, 2024, Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith, also known as Chef Smith, made the allegation that Guinness World Records had awarded him a certificate for setting a new record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
Chef Smith made the announcement during a press conference at La Palm Beach Hotel on Tuesday, July 2. He began his marathon cooking journey on February 1, 2024, and continued for 820 hours, concluding on March 6, 2024, despite initially aiming for 1,200 hours.
The inscription on his certificate reads: “The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 802 hours 25 minutes and was achieved by Ebenezer Smith (Ghanaian) in Spintex, Accra, Ghana, from February 1 to March 6, 2024.”
Chef Smith from Ghana Arrested
Shortly after announcing his Guinness Record feat, Chef Smith was arrested by the La police and detained over allegations of defrauding one of his sponsors, Amadia Shopping Mall, of approximately GHC350,000 during his cooking marathon.
