Disney and Pixar’s Upcoming Films
Let’s take a look at the upcoming Disney and Pixar movies, whether they’re hitting theatres or streaming on Disney+. We’ve got a lineup that stretches from now all the way through 2025 and beyond.
Mufasa: The Lion King
Rafiki shares that in the prequel to the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King, Kiara, Simba, and Nala’s daughter, reveals the tale of how her grandfather Mufasa ascended to the throne of the Pride Lands. The story will also explore the transformation of Mufasa and Scar’s relationship from loving brothers to bitter enemies, with Timon and Pumbaa adding their own colourful commentary along the way.
Moana 2
Guess what? The Walt Disney Company dropped a bombshell on February 7, 2024 – they announced Moana 2! And get this, it’s coming just a year after they announced the live-action remake of Moana. Talk about keeping us on our toes!
In the teaser trailer, we see Moana on the beach, getting ready to blow her conch shell. The company also unveiled a sneak peek image of Moana, Maui, and a few fresh faces cruising alongside a magnificent whale shark. It seems that this creature may have a special significance to Moana, as her late grandmother Tala took the form of a manta ray.
In the surprise sequel, the plot follows the new young chief of Motonui Island as she sets sail with Maui and a fresh crew of seafarers. Their journey takes them beyond the shores of Oceania, all sparked by an unexpected call from her wayfaring ancestors.
Snow White (Live-Action)
Did you hear the news about Rachel Zegler? She’s been cast as the lead Disney Princess in the live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The film’s release date got pushed back to March 21, 2025, due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
There was some controversy surrounding the casting because Zegler, who is part-Colombian, doesn’t exactly match Snow White’s traditional appearance. Additionally, she mentioned wanting to make the character stronger than in the original. Zegler addressed both of these concerns, though. In October 2023, Disney even released a first-look image of Snow White and the dwarves, using CGI to recreate their looks from the original film.
Elio
Elio is a story where extraterrestrials abduct an 11-year-old boy, believing him to be Earth’s representative to the rest of the cosmos. Once Elio finds himself transported to the Communiverse, he must navigate a diverse intergalactic council made up of accidental contacts from other planets. In order to find his way back home, Elio must forge connections with peculiar alien beings and overcome a series of challenging trials.
Pixar had to change the release date for Elio due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes that caused a halt in film production. The new release date is now June 13, 2025, instead of the original March 1, 2024.
Zootopia 2
Last February, Iger shared that there are plans for the development of Zootopia 2, Frozen 3, and Toy Story 5. There isn’t much information available about the upcoming sequel to the movie set in a city full of animals in different climates, but more details will be shared in the future.
Regarding the film, a couple of the actors discussed some ideas about what might happen. Ginnifer Goodwin expressed her interest in a role reversal between her character Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman’s Nick Wilde. As they form a cop team, she mentioned that it would be intriguing to see Nick take on the task of convincing Judy that the world is worth fighting for. However, Bateman expressed his desire for the plot to revolve around “the two of us, going out there and kicking ass.” Tidying the streets. We’re a pair of fresh officers hitting the streets. So, just a little heads up for any potential troublemakers out there.
Toy Story 5
On February 8, 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger delighted Toy Story fans by announcing that Pixar is currently working on Toy Story 5. Even though Toy Story 4 seemed to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion with Woody and Buzz Lightyear parting ways, it seems like the story isn’t over yet. While some fans of Pixar films were thrilled by the news, there were others who raised doubts about the need for a fifth Toy Story film.
We don’t have any specific information about a release date for Toy Story 5, but if it follows the same timeline as the previous films, it probably won’t be released until sometime between 2026 and 2028. It will take approximately seven to nine years after the release of the last film.
Frozen 3
Bob Iger shared the exciting news on February 8, 2023, that Frozen 3 is currently being developed. However, there hasn’t been much information released about the highly anticipated sequel since then. Oh, guess what? Idina Menzel and Josh Gad have officially announced that they will be returning to play Elsa and Olaf again! It remains uncertain whether Kristen Bell will reprise her role as the spirited protagonist Anna.
There haven’t been any official details released about Frozen 3’s story, but it’s anticipated to continue from where Frozen 2 left off. Anna is set to become the queen of Arendelle, taking over after Elsa decided to become the guardian of the Enchanted Forest. Elsa discovered that she is the fifth spirit, connecting people and magic. Regarding the release date, there’s a possibility that it could be in late 2025.
