As the leading food critic in Nigeria, Opeyemi Famakin is a culinary journalist who loves to make this claim. He is a native of Nigeria’s Osun state, namely Ile-Ife. The eldest of three children, he is. He was born and raised in a small town in Lagos State, Nigeria’s Ikoyi neighborhood.

Ope’s father was in the government and was frequently posted. He had to deploy overseas at one of those posts, so his family relocated there. Thus, he spent some of his early years in the US.

Biography

Like Ope, his mother can likewise be characterized as a gourmand. She took him and his brothers to several domestic and overseas restaurants when they were young so they could sample and learn about various cuisines and cultures. He would query her about the cuisine, such as “What the food is called, how it was made,” when they went out to eat as a family. She made him want to write about culinary journalism. She knew he loved eating, so she would get him cookbooks and take him to fancy restaurants.

Early Life and Education

He concentrated on journalism while studying mass communication at UNILAG. He wrote about food and sex as a lifestyle columnist after college graduation. He spent a few years working as a journalist before starting his career as an editor. He began working at Pulse Ng during his sophomore year, making him a senior editor at 23/24.

After a few years, he decided to move to advertising because he thought there was nothing more for him in journalism. Even though he didn’t realize it then, he was just beginning his career as a food critic.
