From Friendship to Forever: A Serendipitous Love Story . So there I was, strolling back to my dorm like I owned the place when a bunch of guys decided to play a game of “let’s shove someone into a van.” Spoiler alert: I ended up becoming best buddies with the hero who swooped in to save the day. Talk about an unexpected friendship story! Even though we were practically joined at the hip, the idea of romance between us was as likely as finding a unicorn in a coffee shop.
We were practically neighbours, just a quick 15-minute walk away, yet we didn’t cross paths until college because we were busy attending different schools. Talk about a missed opportunity for childhood shenanigans!
One summer during my second year, I happened to see him at a convenience store with two other guys while on vacation. My parents greeted him, and that’s when I met his childhood best friend—a tall, shy, handsome blonde. We exchanged glances, and my best friend quickly said, “No way, you’ll eat him alive, and I can’t handle being stuck in the middle!”
At the time, I was a free-spirited, adventurous person. Three days later, his best friend called me for a date, and we went out on a double date with our mutual friend and my younger sister. That date led to an entire summer of fun and adventure together. I was outgoing, and he was content being laid-back. Despite our differences, we clicked.
We both realised our colleges were as far apart as possible on the East Coast, and since neither of us was keen on marriage or kids, we figured we had struck gold with a perfect, no-strings-attached arrangement. What could possibly go wrong, right? But we totally didn’t see the love train coming at full speed! The week before he returned to school, he confessed his feelings and proposed in the middle of a restaurant. I was so surprised and overjoyed that I turned into a leaky tap and shouted yes!
We kept the connection alive through a delightful mix of long-distance communication, emails, and phone calls—because who doesn’t love a good chat while pretending to study until graduation?
