The Nigerian Police Force, led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, successfully rescued 20 medical students who were kidnapped in Benue State on August 15, 2024. The students, from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were traveling to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students’ annual convention when they were abducted.
Swift Tactical Response
The abduction caused widespread concern, prompting IGP Egbetokun to deploy tactical units, including helicopters, drones, and specialized vehicles, to locate and rescue the students. The security forces engaged the kidnappers in a coordinated assault, resulting in the death of a notorious kidnapper and the arrest of two others. IGP Egbetokun confirmed that no ransom was paid for the students’ release.
Collaboration and Community Support
IGP Egbetokun credited the success of the operation to the collaboration between various security agencies, local vigilantes, and intelligence from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). He praised the bravery and precision of the officers involved and confirmed that the arrested suspects are providing valuable information to dismantle the criminal network.
Commitment to National Security
The IGP reiterated the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of all citizens. He assured the public that efforts would continue to bring criminals to justice and reduce insecurity across the country. He also encouraged those still held captive not to lose hope, expressing confidence in the police’s ability to resolve ongoing cases.
Post-Rescue Support
At the handover ceremony, University of Jos Vice Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya announced plans to provide psychosocial support to the rescued students before reintegrating them into society. He emphasized the importance of counseling to help the students overcome any trauma they may have experienced.
A Message of Resilience
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Commissioner for Finance Michael Oglegba, encouraged the students to remain resilient and strive for excellence in their studies. He acknowledged the improved security situation in Benue State and urged the students to make the most of the resources invested in securing their release.
Gratitude from Parents
John Enger, speaking on behalf of the parents, shared their initial fears due to past kidnapping incidents in the country. He expressed deep gratitude to the Nigerian Police Force for ensuring the safe return of their children, highlighting the anxiety and desperation felt by the parents during the students’ captivity.
